The need for nuclear weapons is gone.

With the demise of the Soviet Union, the excuse for storing nuclear weapons has gone but this appears not to be the case with New Labour.

Blair is planning to renew Trident with more sophisticated weaponry at a staggering pounds 25bn. Michael Meacher and Clare Short, pictured, have spearheaded a major Commons campaign to stop Blair secretly updating these weapons, which I hope will be supported by all our local MPs.

It would have been terrifying had nuclear weapons been used against the Soviet Union, with carnage on a massive scale. But when has there ever been a need for such weapons? Who are we going to target?

The money could be ploughed into needy causes like the NHS and free travel for pensioners.
