The man Singh has assigned the job.

EVER since bureaucratturned- politician M. S. Gill took over as sports minister in April 2008, he has made more enemies than friends. As a bureaucrat, Gill took bold decisions as secretary in the agriculture ministry and the department of chemicals, petro- chemicals and pharmaceuticals during 1988- 92.

His career reached its peak when he became India's chief election commissioner in 1993, a job he held till 1996.

After retirement, Gill took over as sports minister from Mani Shankar Aiyar and he brought in the " strictness" that he is known for.

At the beginning of this year, he decided to crack the whip on errant sports federations, who complained that he was unnecessarily trying to throw his weight around.

Yet, for all the criticism, Gill has always been proactive and bold. An avid mountaineer, he took up his new stint as a challenge.

Over the past one year, Gill has been the interface between the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee ( OC) and the government.

But he has often remarked that it was the OC's job to get things done as one scandal after another began to hit the Games.

Now that the Prime Minister has given Gill the onus to put things in order, he is virtually facing a deadline every minute.

There are only 49 days to go for the Delhi Commonwealth Games and everybody henceforth will be watching Gill.
