The longest slogo f the seasonb ut Betting Bill comes out on top- just; SIDEWAYS GLANCE.

I BET you thought the La Touche Cup is the longest race in the Irish racing calendar. It usually is. Not this year, which has seen the running of a special match race.

Sadly this unique event, involving two runners from separate facilities at the famed Leinster House stables, has provided none of the excitement that attended the wonderful encounter between Buck House and Dawn Run.

Last week, after a slowly run contest lasting many months and involving numerous and varied obstacles, Betting Bill, a colt by Government out of You'reallpayingnow, trained by Mr Michael Noonan, staggered across the finishing line.

Unfortunately most of the spectators had already left the Dail Eireann track for their summer holidays, although it's understood that Mr Simon Coveney, trainer of the other runner, Special Report, a gelding by Indecon out of Who'spayingnow, will remain at the course to welcome his charge.

The winning trainer is reportedly hoping to retain a significant proportion of the prize fund won by Betting Bill. Indeed, it is not yet clear if there will be any left over for the connections of the vanquished Special Report.
