Byline: Laura Hartley

The internationally renowned Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Benjamin Britten's War Requiem inside Coventry Cathedral next month.

Commissioned for the consecration of the New Cathedral in 1962, the choral masterpiece is considered one of Britten's most iconic works and is regularly performed worldwide.

The performance on Wednesday, November 14, will be a very special event bringing the War Requiem back to where it was first performed.

The event takes place 78 years to the day since bombs fell and destroyed the original St.Michael's Cathedral, which now stands as a constant reminder of the effects of war in the city of peace and reconciliation.

This year also marks 100 years since the Diocese of Coventry was formed and a century since the death of war poet Wilfred Owen, whose words are woven together with the Requiem Mass.

Owen was killed in action on November 4, 1918, during the crossing of the Sambre--Oise Canal, exactly one week (almost to the hour) before the signing of the Armistice which ended the war.

"The Requiem is perhaps the most important work I have yet written." - Britten to Vladimir Stephanov, Russian Ministry of Culture.

Asha Eade-Green, events manager ofCoventry Cathedral, said: "It is an absolute privilege to be bringing the War Requiem back to the cathedral where it was first performed.

"It's really important, especially now we areUK City of Culture 2021to share the rich cultural heritage of Coventry."
