The Greenwood histories of the modern nations

DS77

Written to be accessible to a high school audience, this book provides an overview of the history of Iraq. Starting from the first stirrings of civilization in Mesopotamia, and traveling through the rise of Islam, Iraq's many years as part of the Ottoman Empire, British occupation after World War I, and the political upheavals that followed the Revolution of 1958, the history ends with the invasion and occupation of Iraq by American and British forces. Discussion of the invasion as well as other issues concerning American involvement with Iraq such as the Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, and the punitive sanctions placed on Iraq after that war tends toward general agreement with most American narratives supportive of President Bush's policies of "bringing democracy to Iraq." Included in the volume is a timeline of historical events, brief biographical entries on notable people in Iraqi history, a glossary, and a bibliographic essay.
