The future of nursing: leading change, advancing health.

THE INSTITUTE OF MEDICINE (IOM) is an interdisciplinary advisory body to the nation on issues impacting health. Established m 1970 under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences, the IOM provides independent, objective, evidence-based advice to policy makers, health professionals, the private sector, and the public. In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the IOM launched a two-year initiative to respond to the need to assess and transform the nursing profession. The IOM appointed the Committee on the RWJF Initiative on the Future of-Nursing, at the IOM, with the purpose of producing a report that would make recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing. * The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, released by the IOM in October 2010, is the latest in a series of reports that have had a profound impact on stimulating positive change in nursing and health care. With permission from the National Academy of Sciences, Courtesy of National Academies Press, we are pleased to reprint three articles that were written in support of the Future of Nursing report. These articles are published with the report, as appendixes. Information about the IOM and the Future of Nursing report is online at www.iom.edu/About- IOM.aspx.
