The exhibition in food valley.

From 7th to 11th May this year, Parma will host Italy's biggest and best international food exhibition... Cibus, the Latin word for food. The youngest of the international food shows in Europe, having started in 1985, Cibus has attracted over 1500 exhibitors and is likely to again welcome over 100,000 visitors. Parma is really at the heart of food processing in Italy; according to Ferdinando Catella of Federalimentare, the food industry association, the Italian food Industry employs around 380,000 and over the last ten years has increased production by around 20 per cent with investment outstripping other industries.

Cibus started as the showcase of Italian food, not just the famous cheese and ham made on its doorstep, but dairy products, processed fruits and vegetables, pasta and bakery products from every part of the country. Today, the exhibition has become not just European but also International in both exhibitors and more importantly with the rising number of buyers from other countries. To paraphrase Enzo Baldassi, Chairman of Ente Fiere di Parma when he spoke at a recent meeting in London perhaps Cibus has been termed incorrectly the Mediterranean pole of European food show, its claim should be the crossroads of gastronomic tradition of Countries to the North and the sun-drenched agriculture of the Mediterranean.

Should Latin appears uninteresting and dry in modern times, Cibus represents an exciting blend of colour, taste and novelty served in a modern setting. After all it was the Lombards who brought us seasoning, so the Fiere di Parma have organised a feast covering 100,000 sq. m.
