Developers who use the Unified Modeling Language (UML) now have a tool to help create consistent and understandable code, a situation which is especially helpful in team situations or when developers do not share the same geography. Consultant Ambler provides rules of usage and describes standards and guidelines for creating effective UML diagrams, covering such topics as common UML modeling elements, and use-case, class, package, sequence, communication. State machine, activity, component, deployment, object, composite structure, interaction and timing diagrams. In a brief chapter he describes Agile modeling values, principles and practices. For ease of use he follows the model set by that very famous book about the elements of English style and a number of easily understood illustrations.
