The eighteenth annual New York Dance and Performance Awards, known as The Bessies after the late teacher Bessie Sch0nberg Varley, honored twenty-eight artists in five categories at its September 22 ceremony at The Joyce Theater. Creator-choreographer awards went to Germany's Pina Bausch for sustained achievement; Israel's Yasmeen Godder for i feel funny today and Ohad Naharin for Naharin's Virus; The Wooster Group for To You, the Birdie/(Phedre); and Annie-B Parson and Paul Lazar and their Big Dance Theater. Sarah Michelson, Donna Uchizono, and Reggie Wilson were among the other winners.
