The death of ... John Henry Brack.
John, a well-known figure in Heaton, Newcastle, lost Anne four weeks before he passed away on February 15.
Known by many as Jack, he worked as a casual handyman and helped out in local shops after his retirement and up until the age of 82.
Grandson Ian said: "He died of a broken heart really, as they were completely devoted to each other and their family. They were very active and he needed to be out all the time and was a well-known face."
Born and raised in Byker, Jack's earliest memories and tales came from working, from the age of 14, at stables near Byker Bridge, where he walked horses to Heddon-on-the-Wall.
During the war, Jack worked to restore bombed-out buildings and carried out camouflage painting on factories along the Tyne. He married Anne Hildreth Porter, from Howdon, and the pair settled in Shields Road.
After the war he worked as a joiner and sign writer until his retirement, and Anne worked as a dinner lady at Heaton Manor School.
The couple went on to have one child Ann, who tragically died 12 years ago from breast cancer. Ann had two children, John, 37, and Ian, 35.
Jack and Ann had three great-grandchildren, and were about to welcome a fourth into the family, as John's third child is due in two weeks.
