The courtway legacy.
The University of Central Arkansas is searching for a replacement for Tom Courtway, who announced in December that he wanted to step down as UCA president and return to teaching at the UCA College of Business.
The university will have a hard time finding someone of his steadiness, ability to bring people together for the good of the institution and refreshing lack of ... baloney.
Courtway first stepped in as interim president after Lu Hardin announced his resignation Aug. 28, 2008. Hardin's departure capped months of turmoil at the school, turmoil stemming from Hardin's deceptive efforts to obtain a $300,000 bonus early. Hardin later pleaded guilty to federal money laundering and wire fraud charges.
After Hardin left, Courtway worked to get UCA's cash flow problems under control. "It would have been doomsday if we couldn't have gotten ... advances from the state," he told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette last year. "So, we were on the brink," he said.
Courtway gracefully stepped aside when in 2009 UCA hired Allen Meadors as president, returning to his general counsel role. Courtway even more gracefully stepped right back in as interim president--again--in September 2011 when Meadors resigned under pressure over controversy involving a food vendor contract.
By December 2011, the university community realized it was time to drop the "interim" from Courtway's title, and he became UCA's president.
When Courtway announced in December 2015 that he was ready to leave as UCA chief, Shane Broadway, former director of the state Department of Higher Education, summed up Courtway's legacy nicely: "Through both difficult situations UCA experienced, UCA as we know it today would not exist without Tom Courtway. I think he restored the trust of people in the community, people at the Capitol, people throughout the state."
