The cap fits at Ofcom.

TELECOMS watchdogs want to ring the changes to save mobile phone users from a "bill shock".

Ofcom revealed that in the last six months 1.4million people were hit with extra charges after overspending.

They are calling on the industry to cap fees for roaming outside Europe, agree to limits on bills to cover lost or stolen phones and let contract customers set their own budgets. And they want all providers to send out alerts warning users when they reach 80per cent of their limit.

Consumer champs Which? said: "We want clearer information for customers about charges plus greater protection for consumers from data charges."
