The Business Of Exports

With 10 Percent Of Sales Abroad, Modern Chemical Proves It's Not Just For The Big Guys Anymore

Talk about stumbling upon the export business. Russ Huntley went to the mailbox one day and found an order for his company's product from Israel.

"I didn't know what to do with it," says Huntley, of Modern Chemical in Jacksonville, a three-man operation. Obviously, he figured it out -- after a two-year effort, exports account for close to 10 percent of sales for the company's aqueous, nontoxic, non-caustic, chemical degreaser.

The product is used on engines and fabricated metals by companies like United Airlines and Pratt-Whitney, a jet engine manufacturer. It was a recommendation by Pratt-Whitney in their maintenance manual, in fact, that brought the Israeli order to Huntley's office.

"I ended up at the trade department (the regional office of the U.S. & Foreign Commercial Service office). They got me to a seminar in Pine Bluff, and we went from there. Any company in Arkansas, no matter how small, can do it with the help of the trade department or the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission," says Huntley, singing the praises of the agencies.

Modern Chemical has run an ad in Commercial News USA and has participated in US&FCS trade shows. The company now exports to South Africa, Belgium and Korea, among other countries, and is negotiating additional accounts.
