Plastic cards, pop-ups, slide charts, name labels and other perks can make your mailings so irresistable recipients will be racing to tear'em open

Do direct marketers have more fun than retailers? At retail, you're eyeball-to-eyeball with your customers--able to read faces and resistant reactions to your proposition. You can see at once whether an item is priced too high or whether you should even be offering it at all.

If it's a bomb, you can drop the price by half and at least recover some of your money. At retail, you are participating in a rite as old as humankind.

Direct marketing is a head game, pure and simple. The best direct marketers are like method actors--able to get inside the skins and heads of the people they are trying to sell--and actually become those people, thinking what they think, feeling what they feel.

A good direct marketer must be part novelist, too, creating scenarios, pre-guessing objections and then overcoming those objections in the copy and design (if it's mail, space or TV) or by the sincerity of the voice (if it's radio or telemarketing).

With the exception of telephone sales, direct marketing is practiced away from people--"distance selling" is what the Europeans call it. It's a business of cold logic, common sense, experience and alchemy (as in list enhancements).

Guru Axel Andersson says flat out, "If you want to dramatically increase results, dramatically improve your offer."

But first, you have to get the person's attention. And in the mailbox--or in-box at the office--every envelope is a salesman shouting for attention. Every ringing telephone sounds the same. In that sense, every offer is in direct competition with every other offer. To be successful, you must stand out from the crowd.

My advice to readers: Write, phone or fax these folks and get information and, if possible, samples. You might not need the information now, but you never know when your marketing or creative folks will come up with an idea to jazz up a mailing package or an offer. If you have what they need in your files, you'll be a hero (or heroine).
