The authors assert we have long known of some cyclical bodily functions such as sleeping and wakefulness or reactions to changing seasons, but biologists have largely underestimated the importance of time in the life processes. To rectify this they describe one specific aspect of biological cycles, the mechanism of circadian melatonin secretion of the pineal gland in the chicken to examine the role of circadian processes in virtually all vertebrate species, covering the morphology of the pineal gland, its changes in functions during phylogenesis, its support of the biological clock, and its regulation of breeding and orientation. Using in vivo and in vitro studies they examine the features of the biological clock function, and examine how this clock functions through the life of the bird. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
