The art of Liverpool; emails &letters.

MUCH fanfare has surrounded the new art exhibition at The Walker, Ed Vaizey even gave the opening speech at a private viewing of A Collector's Eye: Cranach to Pissarro last week.

Do not get me wrong, the opportunity to see 60-odd works from the Schorr Collection - the largest in private hands in the country, amounting to over 400 paintings amassed during the past 40 years - is not to be sniffed at.

But as impressive as, say, the 17th-century paintings Peasants in an Interior and Democritus and Heraclitus undoubtedly are, I felt the urge to pass through the exhibition as quickly as I could to see, yet again, Samuel Austin''s Bootle Landmarks, John Atkinson Grimshaw''s Liverpool Docks by Night and, given its recent return from the National Gallery, Ben Johnson''s Liverpool Cityscape.
