The Twelve Apostles.

The Twelve Apostles. Marianna Mayer. New York: Phyllis Fogelman, 2000. Illus., hardcover, 32 pp., $16.99.

This is another classy publication that combines Mayer's thoughtful storytelling with her handsomely reproduced paintings. Here, each apostle has a page of commentary including symbols and holy days, facing a full-page reproduction, usually of a detail from a larger painting. Famous artists like Poussin, Durer, and El Greco are here, as well as many who are less well known or even anonymous. This collection offers not only useful reproductions, but also information about the people portrayed, which helps us better appreciate artists' interpretative representations.
