[dagger][dagger] THE TOPP TWINS (text) Jenny Cooper (illus.) There's a Hole in my Bucket + CD Scholastic, 2011 unpaged $16.99 pbk ISBN 9781775430469 SCIS 1523077

This is a fun picture book complemented by a polished CD tucked into a well designed packet in the back cover. It plays an adaptation of the song by popular entertainers and activists, the Topp sisters. In this version of the traditional song Henry is depicted as a billy goat in wellington boots and Liza as a duck with a spotted head scarf and checked apron. Henry seems in despair about his bucket and Liza is full of the practical suggestions that provide the iterative stages of their infinite loop of difficulty with the bucket. The entertaining cartoon style illustrations render the funny side of the interminable predicament.

The Topp Twins, a noted New Zealand comic and country singing duo, have adopted an American folksy musical sound and spoken accent, harking back to the origins of the most well known version. As they give personalities to the two characters the dialogue builds the cumulative verses of the song. This valuable package of book and CD encourages the appeal of reading while also suggesting ideas about gender roles and problem solving.
