The Sutton to host Euro-style restaurant.

Informal European dining will be the theme of a new restaurant about to open at The Sutton, the elegant boutique apartment hotel now nearing completion at 330 East 56th Street in Manhattan.

Local restauranteur William Schey has signed a million dollar long term lease for over 3,000 square feet of space on The Sutton's main lobby level for his newest venture, The Small Cafe and Secret Garden. It is expected to open early next month.

According to Schey, the restaurant, which will feature an intimate cocktail lounge, will offer the same extensive continental menu as his popular eatery, The Small Cafe, located at First Avenue, between 56th and 57th Streets. That facility will close when the new restaurant opens. Schey also owns and operates Call Cuisine, an East Side gourmet take-out and caterer.

The Sutton is being developed by Alan B. Friedberg, who also acted as the broker in this real estate transaction. The corporate owner of The Sutton is 330 East 56th Street, Inc., a subsidiary of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, Ltd., developer and manager of fine hotels and residences in Asia and the U.S. Schey was represented by attorney, Joseph Albanese, P. C.

The Sutton, which offers 84 exquisitely appointed apartments featuring British decor and hotel service, is targeted primarily at an international corporate and diplomatic audience interested in occupancy of one month or longer.

The selection of William Schey as the restauranteur was important to Friedberg. Schey comes to The Sutton with 15 years experience in owning and operating his present restaurant in the same neighborhood and has a strong following with the residents in the Sutton Place area.
