The Stone Monkey.

THE STONE MONKEY. Jeffery Deaver. 2002. Read by Boyd Gaines. Abridged. 4 tapes. 5 hrs. Simon & Schuster Audio. 0-7435-2064-5. $26.00. Cardboard, plastic; plot notes. SA

The stone monkey is an amulet worn by Dr. John Sung. He is one of two dozen illegal Chinese immigrants smuggled to Long Island by a snakehead known as "The Ghost." But all goes horribly awry as the boat nears the shore, and most of the "piglets" (as The Ghost calls them) are killed in a blast he sets. He proceeds to hunt down the survivors as paralyzed criminologist Lincoln Rhyme and his capable protegee Amelia Sachs attempt to capture him before more blood is spilled. The action is fast and furious and reader Gaines gives it remarkable credibility with his many and varied voices. Listeners will marvel at this awesome reading.
