The Social Accountability Program: Continuing the Community Benefit Traditions of Not-for-Profit Homes and Services for the Aging.

The Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA) and the American Association of Homes for the Aging (AAHA) today announced their collaboration on a book titled The Social Accountability Program. Subtitled Continuing the Community Benefit Traditions of Not-for-Profit Homes and Services for the Aging, it is intended to help not-for-profit organizations examine and reaffirm their many benefits to local communities.

The book builds upon CHA's earlier efforts, which resulted in a similar guide in 1989 for not-for-profit hospitals.

"As community-minded organizations, CHA and AAHA see The Social Accountability Program as offering an opportunity for our members who provide long-term care services to reaffirm their commitment to the poor, frail, and other elderly in their communities," said John E. Curley, Jr., CHA president and chief executive officer. "It helps facilities develop a community service plan that can enable innovative community services and activities to be developed.

The soon-to-be-published CHA and AAHA book leads organizations through a number of steps in its five chapters. Chapter One takes an organization through the process of clarifying its mission and values and ensuring that its policies and practices are consistent with both. Chapter Two helps an organization define its community and prioritize unmet needs within it. Chapter Three carries the organization through the actual provision of community services according to the plan it has developed. Chapter Four outlines the steps in preparing community service reports and communicating the organization's activities. Chapter Five sets out a guide and questions to help the organization evaluate its community service role.
