The Serpents Trail.
Sixty-three-year-old Maxie McNabb spends her summers in Homer, Alaska but climbs into her RV (along with her trusty dachshund Stretch) to winter in the south in this series debut. This particular autumn, though, she heads directly to Grand Junction, CO (not Colorado Springs, as indicated on the cover). Her old college friend Sarah is fatally ill and has something important to tell Maxie. Unfortunately, Sarah is delirious when she arrives so the unflappable Maxie has to figure everything out on her own.
Lee Adams perfectly captures the appealing Maxie, who tenaciously goes about the business of uncovering, layer by layer, Sarah's secret past. Some character delineation occurs in this subtle multi-voice narration. Male characters speak with lower, somewhat flatter tones, and an elderly neighbor has a slightly querulous voice. Cozy fans will be delighted to travel with Maxie.
