The Quay.

Every now and then a bright star rises on a city's horizon, a special place that expresses the city's spirit. In Sarasota, that's Sarasota Quay.

Overlooking the blue-green waters of Sarasota Bay, this retail, entertainment and office complex has been hailed as the most exciting commercial building in Southwest Florida. Its Post-Modern design is part storybook fantasy, part tropical enchantment. Pass under the grand archways and you enter spacious, airy levels, with sweeping water views, fountains, flowers, and colorful banners. Small wonder that in a few short years, the Quay has become the heartbeat of downtown Sarasota, voted the Number 1 place to meet people by readers of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

By day, shoppers browse through the Quay's eclectic collection of unique boutiques and specialty stores; diners arrive for lunch; and office workers take a cappucino break to watch sailboats skim across the bay and water taxis motor up to the dock. If you look down from the restaurant terraces, you can spot dolphins frolicking or occasionally, a manatee and her calf gliding right beneath the surface with unhurried grace.

At night, the Quay comes alive with thousands of twinkling Tivoli lights and the rhythms of live music from its nightclubs. Watch the cars pull up to the free valet parking (you can also come by trolley or water taxi) and you'll see half of Sarasota -- young people in colorful dancing dresses, jazz lovers heading to the downstairs club, couples on their way to an elegant dinner. (The Quay is the center of culinary excitement in Sarasota, with authentic Japanese, Spanish, Italian and innovative American restaurants.) Some of Sarasota's most spectacular special events take place at the Quay -- rock concerts, country music shows, symphony and ballet performances, and black-tie galas, where the moon and the stars add their glow to the partiers in the plazas and arcades. Romance, treasures, and a sophisticated tropical setting . . . the spirit of Sarasota, at Sarasota Quay.
