The Prestigious Award for 'Photofinisher of the Year' Will Be Given to One of the Nation's Longest Established Photofinishing Labs.

Berry & Homer, Inc., 2035 Richmond St., Philadelphia, PA a custom photo and graphic imaging firm gained the national award -- coincidentally during the firms 101st anniversary of being in business.

In announcing the award, Photographic Processing Magazine reported Berry & Homer was chosen for its "reputation through a long-standing history of service to its customers and to the industry at large."

"Berry & Homer has always been on the leading edge of the craft ... and today is leading the way toward an increasingly digital solution to a wide variety of imaging tasks," the authoritative publication said.

The firm is the oldest continuously operating commercial photo lab in the country.

Joseph Thompson, Jr. is president/owner and his son Joseph Thompson, III is executive vice president/owner.

Previously, Berry & Homer was honored by the U.S. Congress, and has received a "Freedom Award" from the Freedom Foundation, at Valley Forge, Pa.

That honor was for Berry & Homer's contribution in documenting America's history with photography.

The current visual displays at Ellis Island, NY and at prestigious museums and institutions around the world also originated in the Berry & Homer plants.

In conjunction with it's work of preserving American History, Berry & Homer was instrumental in working with the City of Philadelphia to create the national Fourth of July photo. It pictured Americans from 50 states, all of whom were born on the Fourth of July. It is called the "Photo of the Century".

Berry & Homer helped set up the shoot, processed the film, printed it and made it available to the media.

The corporate offices and plant in Philadelphia covers a 40,000 sq. ft. facility, comparable to a full city block.

The company also maintains a plant of 14,000 sq. ft. in Orlando, Fla.

There is a 6,000 sq. ft. shop in Lanham, Md., which services the Washington and Baltimore areas.

All of the facilities are linked together electronically with T-1 and ISDN lines, and also utilize the Internet for their FTP site.

The shops work back and forth electronically as workflow and capacity at each plant dictates.

Originally, Berry & Homer was only a custom black & white mural and photo restoration company.

These services are still provided, but are now computerized. Murals and display work are still a mainstay.

Over the last 10 years, the company has "had years where we've spent three million dollars per year on new, high-tech equipment," Joseph Thompson, Jr. reports.

Known as a "one-stop shop" for virtually every imaging need, the company services commercial accounts nationally, but keeps a focus on museums, corporations and design client needs. New services include the "wrapping of buses and large vehicles" with outdoor advertising, plus short run, full color printing.

The firm also houses a complete, major photo studio, utilizing both conventional and digital film.

Other new services include the creation of vinyl banners, printing of full-color graphics, and a complete bindery.

According to Thompson, "anyone that comes through our door with a need for anything utilizing an image becomes our customer."
