The Plays of Sophocles, 2nd Edition

A. F. Garvie

96 pages

Classical World Series

For the second edition, Garvie adds material on the staging of ancient Greek playwright Sophocles' plays, exploring his treat of space and the dramatic significance that, for the his original audience, seems to underlie a character's entry or exit by the skene door or the eisodos door. Also, he says, his understanding of Women of Trachis and Electra has recently been influenced by the recognition that they belong to a very long tradition of "return poetry," the conventional themes of which would be familiar to the original audiences, and would certainly affect their expectations.
