Byline: Submitted by Cara Recine The Varsity Center

The Phonics have performed at Carbondale's Varsity Center before, and they always put on a show you don't want to miss.

The Phonics, based in Cairo, offer up soul, funk, pop and Motown favorites such as Earth, Wind and Fire, the Gap Band, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson, and Stevie Wonder.

The group consists of original 1969 members Harry Williams on drums and vocals, Lee Carter on lead guitar and vocals and Larry Woods on bass guitar.

Other regular members are Wilma Carter on vocals, John Carter on keyboards and Julie Watkins on congas.

The band is supplemented by a horn section that includes Shadi Frick and Chris Rigdon.

* The show begins at 7 p.m. July 27. Tickets are $17.
