The Passing of President Pinochet.

I just wanted to offer some brief comments regarding the article by William F. Jasper ("Passing of President Pinochet," January 8) which acknowledges the passing of Pinochet.

Generally, I agree with Jasper and the John Birch Society most of the time. But I think any apology for Pinochet is both unproductive and a waste of time. I think Allende was removed, and Pinochet installed, because that was what Nixon and the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) wanted. Perhaps you believe that Allende was removed because he was a "leftist." I think he was removed because he was a nationalist.

You want to say that Pinochet was somehow better than all of the other dictators that the United States' CFR-controlled government has propped up over the past decades. I don't see any reason to believe that. As far as I'm concerned, the same corrupt political system that is undermining our sovereignty, exporting American industries, bankrupting the Treasury, etc., are the same people who have protected Pinochet from the justice he deserves.

Aside from this, keep up the good work!
