Puchner (Harvard U.) et al. provide the first anthology in a six-volume set of world literature for undergraduate students that collects works in ancient Mediterranean and near Eastern literature, works on creation and the cosmos, ancient Egyptian literature and writings on writing, excerpts from the Hebrew Bible, ancient Athenian drama, India's ancient epics and tales, and early Chinese literature and thought. Focusing on themes of contact and culture, travel, imagined worlds, genres, oral literature, and varieties of literature, this edition makes introductory material clearer and more informative by shortening headnotes and consistently organizing entries, which begin with the author's biography, then the cultural context and an introduction to the work. It adds many images and other visual aids, including scenes of writing and reading from different eras. The maps have been revised to complement the literature better, and timelines have been redesigned. Many works are presented in new translations, including Gilgamesh; Genesis, Exodus, and Job; Homer's Iliad and Odyssey; Sappho's lyrics; Oedipus the King, Antigone, Medea, Lysistrata, and The Aeneid; and Confucius's Analects. Also included are Aesop's Fables, Plato's Symposium, Catullus's poems in a new translation, new selections from book 1 of Ovid's Metamorphoses, a new tale from the Indian Jataka, the Chinese Classic of Poetry, Daodejing, the Chinese Songs of the South, and selections by Zhuangzi and Han Feizi.
