The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center at Lewis & Clark Community College is welcoming a group of Chinese scientists to exchange information and expertise related to large rivers. The Chinese group is made up of chemists and researchers who study water quality and fish populations along the Yangtze River. The visit was organized by The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Geological Survey to allow the Yangtze River group to learn more about long-term resource monitoring programs currently underway along the Mississippi River. John Chick of the Illinois Natural History Survey said the trip is one of several organized exchanges related to large rivers. He said the visit was originally initiated when he and Rik Sparks, NGRREC's research director, visited China last year. Chick said the group is traveling to Illinois specifically to meet with NGRREC researchers to learn about the monitoring activities NGRREC is doing along the Mississippi River.
