The National Directory of Volunteer Accounting Programs

The National Directory of Volunteer Accounting Programs, Accountants for the Public Interest (API), 1012 14th Street, NW, Suite 906, Washington, D.C. 20005. (202) 347-1668, $6 postage/handling.

This directory lists more than 260 local volunteer accounting programs in the United States, adding more than 50 new programs since the 1989 edition. Internal Revenue Service programs and Small Business Development Centers are also included, as well as several nationwide accounting programs. Copies of the directory are available free of charge from API with a fee for postage and handling. The programs listed in the directory offer a wide range of accounting and financial management services including basic financial advice and counseling, tax return preparation, accounting and management seminars and workshops, staff training and service on nonprofit boards of directors. The directory was produced with the aid of a grant from the AICPA with a two fold purpose: to help nonprofits, small businesses and individuals find volunteer accounting assistance, and to help accountants locate volunteer accounting programs through which to volunteer their time and expertise. This directory can provide practitioners, educators and perhaps even retired accounting professionals an opportunity to contribute their accounting knowledge and services to the those in the community who cannot afford these services yet urgently need them.
