The Myth of Heterosexual AIDS.

Another book, The Myth of Heterosexual AIDS, contends that raising concerns about the disease to panic levels serves many interests other than truth or the public.

Michael Fumento, who has written extensively about the disease, declares in his book that hysteria being fostered by headlines warning "Now no one is safe from AIDS!" is part of his myth launched to serve special interests.

"For years we have been warned that AIDS is poised to break out in the heterosexual community," Fumento writes. He proceeds to marshall facts proving the scenario to be highly unlikely and a tragedy because the disease has become a tool for partisan politics.

Fumento acknowledges that the disease is transmittable, but high risk is usually applicable to addicts, bisexuals, and homosexuals who do not practice "safe sex."

He implicates particular groups who have an interest in promulgating the myth: those who view it as a retribution for immorality, and homosexual activists who believe that if the general public can be frightened, more funds will become available for AIDS research.

The book does not spare journalists who use the scare to sell publications. Fumento is particularly incensed at officials of the U.S. Public Health Service, in particular former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, who introduced the term "heterosexual explosion" into the AIDS lexicon only to state later, "From the beginning I've said there does not appear to be a chance that there will be an explosion in the heterosexual community."

Most serious of all, Fumento argues, combatting AIDS has by now drained cancer research to a point where National Cancer Institute's ability to fund promising research proposals is less than any time in the past two decades.
