The Mitsubishi Estate Group.

The Mitsubishi Estate Group has commissioned Hopkins Architects to design a landmark office, retail and restaurant development, marking a new phase for the practice. The Shin-Marunouchi Building will have an estimated project budget of nearly [pounds sterling]500 million (Yen 90 billion / US$850m), and will be almost 200m high. Connecting to Tokyo Station Plaza below, it includes a mix of retail space, restaurants and offices for leading international business tenants. No stranger to prestigious projects, Michael Hopkins makes particular reference to the site's location, which being close to the Emperor's Palace is known as the 'gateway to Japan'. Hopkins Architects will have to draw heavily on their experience in creating contemporary solutions in difficult and historical sites, while adhering to strict commercial constraints. Working alongside architects, Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei, the structure is divided into three sections--two towers, and a podium base that will incorporate retail and restaurants. The project is due for completion in 2007. R. G.
