Compendia Rerum Iudaicarum ad Novum Testamentum; Volume 2/3/1

BM176

First published in 1987, this is a reprint of a classic scholarly volume in Judaic studies. It gives, in readable English, a concise technical overview of rabbinic literature. The editor focuses on explaining the historical process through which the exclusively oral teachings of thousands of Sages--some famous and historically documented, others anonymous or obscure--began to be written down, edited, compiled, and fixed in form. This volume deals with Oral Tora(h), Halakhaic literature, Mishna, Tosefta, Talmud, and External Tractates, how these genres came about, central items or schools within them, and their textual and literary forms. It is designed as an overview for serious scholars and students of Jewish religion who are already familiar with the basics. A secondary audience--serious Jewish learning readers who are not--will find references to sources of the necessary information in the book's abundant footnotes. Knowledge of Hebrew is not required; the book is part of a larger attempt to bring the quality of English-language Jewish scholarship to a level more comparable with Hebrew-reading scholars.
