The Library & Information Technology Association (LITA) announced that William H. Mischo is the recipient of the 2009 Frederick G. Kilgour Award for Research in Library and Information Technology. The award, sponsored by LITA and OCLC, consists of $2,000, a citation, and an expenses-paid trip to the ALA Annual Conference.

Currently, Mischo is head of the Grainger Engineering Library and Information Center at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign Library. According to the release, Mischo was chosen for his work on the design of user-centered information retrieval tools and services; his work on search-query formulation; and his translation of user information discovery needs into software programs. He has also made contributions to the use of Digital Object Identifiers and OpenURLs as methods for identifying journal articles.

LITA also announced that John Blyberg is the recipient of the 2009 LITA/Brett Butler Entrepreneurship Award. The award recognizes entrepreneurship that provides an innovative product or service designed to meet the needs of the library community. The award is sponsored by LITA and Gale, a part of Cengage Learning, and it consists of $5,000 and a certificate. Blyberg received this award for his development of the Social OPAC application suite, or SOPAC (Social Online Public Access Catalog), which is a suite of open source software tools that brings social computing and Web 2.0 to the library catalog.

Currently, Blyberg is the assistant director for innovation and user experience at the Darien Library in Connecticut. Previously, he worked at the Ann Arbor District Library in Michigan. He has also been the IT manager at Lotus Engineering.
