The International Baccalaureate (I.B.) Art/Design Program

THE I.B. PROGRAM IS A TWO-YER pre-university course designed to promote international understanding. The comprehensive course of study is designed to provide students with a balanced education. The program is offered around the world in nearly 500 schools.

The curriculum consists of six subject groups, one of which is "the arts." To be eligible for the diploma all students must offer one subject from each group, submit an extended essay in one of the subjects of the I.B. curriculum, follow a course in the theory of knowledge and engage in extracurricular activities. Students may also undergo examinations in single subjects for which they receive a certificate.

The Art/Design program has the following aims: . to provide students with opportunities to develop their aesthetic, imaginative and creative faculties; . to stimulate and train visual awareness, perception and criticism of the arts of various cultures; . to enable students to discover, develop and enjoy means of creative visual expression which are suited to their temperament and capabilities; . to encourage the pursuit of quality, through training, individual experiment and persistent endeavor; and . to exemplify and encourage a lively inquiring and informed attitude towards art and design in all its forms, both past and present.

Examiners review research workbooks and visit schools to see exhibitions of students' work. In their studio work students are expected to demonstrate: . an inquiring attitude towards a variety of visual phenomena, expressed in persistent research and regular studio work; . imaginative, creative thinking and feeling; . a sensitive appreciation of the medium in hand, and of its expressive potential; . a feeling for the fundamentals of design; . a comprehension of the aesthetic and technical problems encountered in studio practice; . sufficient technical skill to produce some works of quality; . an ability to select and present their own work appropriately.

Students also keep a research workbook and should be able to: . demonstrate clearly in verbal and graphic terms how personal research has led to an understanding of the topics or concepts under consideration; . analyze critically the formal, technical and aesthetic qualities of the art forms studied; . relate this material to its cultural, historical and/or social context, and to their own studio work.
