The IRI Medal.

Recognizing the significant achievements of individual innovators is a core mission of the Innovation Research Interchange (IRI). The IRI Medal, established in 1946, is presented to recognize leaders of technology for outstanding accomplishments in innovation that have contributed broadly to the development of industry and the advancement of science and society. The Medal is awarded at the discretion of IRI's Board of Directors and presented at IRI's Annual Conference. In 2018, the Board awarded the IRI Medal to Yann LeCun.

The 2018 IRI Medal was presented to Yann LeCun in recognition of his work in the fields of machine learning, computational neuroscience, and optical character recognition, and for his contributions to innovation and society.

While working both in industrial labs and in academia, Yann LeCun has pioneered important developments in machine learning, including developing convolutional networks, which now power many online search and tag functions and will play a role in autonomous vehicle technology. LeCun was the founding director of the Facebook AI Lab and the NYU Center for Data Science; he is now Chief AI Scientist at Facebook and Silver Professor at New York University. He is also affiliated with the Courant Institute and the NYU Center for Data Science.

He received a PhD in computer science from Universite P&M Curie (Paris). After a postdoc at the University of Toronto, he joined AT&T Bell Labs, where he became Head of Image Processing Research in 1996. He joined NYU in 2003 and Facebook in 2013. His current interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, mobile robotics, and computational neuroscience.
