Of interest to collectors and specialists, this volume presents full-page plates in oversized format (9.5x13.5") of the broadsheets made from 1671-1682. Paas (Carleton College, Minn.) has performed the herculean task of obtaining images of every known German political broadsheet for this series, with collections listed in 15 countries. Four brief synopses of historical events--the rebellion in Hungary, dynastic concerns of the Habsburgs, French territorial expansion, and the conflict in the Baltic--precede the plates. The plates themselves are accompanied by a sentence to describe the print's content, information on their size, collection, and cross-referencing to related images within the volume. Six of the plates fold out to a larger size. The images depict the horrors of the Thirty Years War, some in explicit detail, as well as the political leaders and groups concerned. The volume, which is not indexed, concludes with brief notes about each sheet, generally editorial comments, such as dates given incorrectly, or physical or publication details.
