Summary: Monitoring world reaction to the Israeli attack on Gaza, The Egyptian Gazette of March 7, 1955 published the following report:

"The United Nations HQ in Jerusalem yesterday announced that Israeli troops attacked an Egyptian military post across the border during the night. The announcement blamed the Israelis for the attack, which touched off the worst flare-up between the Egyptians and the Israelis since the Palestine Armistice was signed in 1948.

"Radio Israel yesterday broadcast a statement by an army spokesman in which he accused the Egyptian Army authorities in the Gaza Strip of using reconnaissance patrols and persons to perform acts of destruction in Israeli territory."

The Gazette further published the text of a cable sent by King Hussein of Jordan to Egyptian Prime Minister Gamal Abdul Nasser expressing grief at the 'dastardly Jewish aggression in Gaza.'

Headlined: Britain, US Deplore Incident, an Egyptian Gazette report said:

"The British government deplores the Israeli-Egyptian border clash which took place in the Gaza area last night, a Foreign Office spokesman said today.

"This is clearly an extremely grave incident which Her Majesty's Government deplores' the spokesman said.

"In Washington, Administration officials expressed deep disappointment today over the border clash.......They added that since border incidents had died down over a long period, there had been cautious hope for better observance of the Armistice, and therefore, the clash was 'deeply disappointing'.
