The Chinese connection; Italian restaurant owner offers his menu in Mandarin.

A Paisley restaurant is extending an extrafriendly hand to its Chinese customers ... by translating its menu into Mandarin.

Zambretto Italian, in the town's High Street, has seen a sharp increase in the number of Chinese people eating at the restaurant.

So owner, Craig Bickett, 31, decided it was time to make their visit even more enjoyable.

He told the Paisley Daily Express: "There are a lot of Chinese tourists just now here in Paisley, partly because the Watermill Hotel is owned by a Chinese company, but the university also has a lot of Chinese students.

"We found that many of them weren't familiar with words like bolognese and carbonara, and they weren't really sure what that meant. "So I found someone online who lives in Italy but who is Chinese and speaks English to translate the full menu for me.

"On our Mandarin menu, it doesn't just say carbonara, it explains what a carbonara is.

"It introduces them to a whole new line of food."

Craig, started in the catering business at the age of 22 when he opened the popular Tucker Box, in Bridge Street. He also has another branch of Zambretto Italian in Old Sneddon Street.

So far, the Mandarin menu has gone down well with customers.

"They're really surprised that we've got it," he said.

"And we're next door to a Chinese supermarket, so we've got it on their wall on the menu board outside.

"Customers absolutely love it.

They tend to go for a lot of seafood. But having this menu gives them the confidence to experiment."

Craig has no plans at the moment to translate his menu into any other languages spoken in Paisley, such as Polish.

"To be honest, we had looked at doing that, but most of our Polish customers can speak really good English, so there's no point," he said.

"But it's because the food is so alien to many Chinese people, that we've done this.

"Many of them have little experience of Italian food and have never tasted it before, whereas most Europeans are very familiar with pizza and all the various pastas we offer."
