The Butler Institute of American Art Features the Art Work of Florian K. Lawton.

CLEVELAND, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Celebrated Ohio artist Florian K. Lawton is in the spotlight again. The Butler Institute of American Art is has recognized Lawton's body of work in an upcoming exhibition Fifty Years of Art. This exhibition is a collaboration between the Florian K. Lawton Foundation and Henry Adams, Professor of Art History at Case Western Reserve University and former Curator of American Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Dr. Adams has published works on Andrew Wyeth, Thomas Hart Benton and his most recent Tom and Jack - which chronicles the relationship between Thomas Hart Benton and Jackson Pollock. This exhibition includes approximately sixty of Lawton's best known images, his scenes of the Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish, Sporting scenes. Several foreign views will also be presented. Many of the watercolors explore the theme of people at work or play, a subject with a long legacy in art beginning with the fifteenth century manuscripts of the Limbourg Brothers and continuing in the images of nineteenth century French Barbizon painters such as Jean-Francoise Millet and Gustave Courbet.

A virtuoso in the water color medium Lawton's flawless technique and romantic appreciation of his subject matter - evokes a strong emotional resonance. His controlled washes of color and close observation of direct light reflect the influence of the best of the American Watercolor tradition, in particular the art of Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent and Andrew Wyeth. Lawton has exhibited widely throughout the United States over his career, with his paintings represented in both Private and Public collections both here and abroad.
