The Botanical Garden: Volume I Trees and Shrubs Volume II Perennials and Annuals.

Ten years in the making, this amazingly comprehensive guide to plants bridges the gap between gardening books and scientific texts. Phillips, an accomplished photographer, and Rix, a noted botanist, profile more than 1,000 genera of temperate plants in the two volumes. Classified by family, plants are covered according to their botany, as well as by their appeal to gardeners. The books incorporate some results from recent DNA studies of the ancestry of plants among other details: genus, species, common names, dates of discovery, range, recognition features, relationships to other plants, ecology, geography, and a few suggestions for propagation and practical uses. However, the strongest element of these books is the more than 4,000 brilliant photographs. Each plant and flower lies on the page in vivid detail, as if you were looking at the real thing. Some elements of the plants have been enlarged to help readers identify them. Firefly, 2002, 491 p./539 p., color photos, hardcover, $75.00 each.
