The Battle of Jericho.

Jericho Prescott, a hefty 16-year-old trumpet whiz, can't believe his luck when he is asked to pledge for the Warriors of Distinction, the coolest club at Frederick Douglass High. His cousin Josh and best friend, Kofi, are also thrilled to be asked and look forward to wearing their slick black jackets and going to the Warriors' "off the hook" parties. Jericho's dream girl, Arielle, even gives him the time of day now that he is a Warrior pledge. For Jericho, school life has never been better. When the pledge rituals become unpleasant and dangerous, Jericho wonders if he has made the right choice.

Juvenile readers will be gripped by the fast-moving story, its mostly realistic though glossy depiction of modern teens and its dramatic, disturbing conclusion. Draper, a former high-school teacher, creates a provocative tale of young people grappling with issues of right and wrong, popularity and self-identity.
