Eleven studies of European countries since 1945, presented by Stephan (Mershon Center for the Study of International Security, Ohio State U.), trace the influence of American culture, reception and hybridization of American culture, and cultural anti- Americanism. Each essay examines the role of U.S. cultural diplomacy, the transfer of American high culture, the spread of American popular or mass culture, and rejection of American cultural products and their modes of distribution (this last being the definition of anti-Americanism for the purposes of the studies). The countries discussed are Great Britain, France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, the Soviet Union/Russia, Poland, Italy, Greece, and Spain.
