The American Catholic Hierarchy and Catholic Bishops in American Politics.

Timothy A. Byrnes examines the relationship between political change and the activities of The American Catholic Hierarchy and Catholic Bishops in American Politics (Princeton University Press, 177 pages, $12.95 paperback).

The American episcopal task is no longer the defense of a persecuted, immigrant church. The Catholic hierarchy collectively can create or fortify social movements in support of preferred policy positions. Byrnes sees the broad picture and analyzes it capably. His study of religion and politics is well-researched and interestingly written.
