One of Margaret Thatcher's handbags fetched Au25,000 in an auction by Lord Archer.

The black glossy handbag was owned by the former prime minister for more than 30 years.

It was photographed as she carried it when she walked alongside then US president Ronald Regan in the US in 1985.

The bag was bought by an unamed Cypriot who is believed to have been a student in Britain when Lady Thatcher was Prime Minister.

Amateur auctioneer and author Lord Archer said: "The handbag makes you automatically think of Margaret Thatcher.

"Someone has captured this and will have, frankly, a historic document for the rest of their lives."

The handbag was one of a number of highly prized items auctioned for charitable causes.

Lawrence Dallaglio's match ball from England's victorious 2003 Rugby World Cup final fetched Au12,500 whilst a Fender Telecaster guitar given by Eric Clapton went for Au15,000.
