Thanks for classic Val.

ONE of the classic songs of the mid-1970s was Rock 'n Roll I Gave You All The Best Years Of My Life.

Composed and performed by Australian singer Kevin Johnson, it went on to become a standard thanks to Radio Eireann presenter Val Joyce.

In those times, Val had a popular Saturday afternoon programme called Airs and Races. After hearing the song, Val was fascinated by the story line and the sensitive rendition by Johnson.

Week after week, Val played the number until it suddenly took off. In many ways, it was one of the defining songs of the era, finding favour with people from varying musical tastes.

To this day, Rock 'n Roll I Gave You All The Best Years of My Life still finds its way onto the airwaves in stations all over Ireland on a regular basis.

A true case of a standard that has never lost its appeal.
