Byline: By GAYLE RITCHIE

DR WHO star David Tennant yesterday hailed Scots for supporting a national fund-raising drive for hospice carers.

His mum Helen, 67, spent her last days at the Accord Hospice in Paisley before dying of cancer in July this year.

David, 36, is backing National Hospice Day, held yesterday, and the sale of pounds 1 thistle badges in aid of Scotland's 11 adult hospices.

He said: "I'm so grateful to everyone who is helping raise money for Accord. "It was such an important place to my mum and is a fantastic and worthy cause."

The fund-raising drive for Accord, which was launched by the Tennants, raised pounds 15,000.

Organisers of the Scotland-wide charity drive say demand for the badges has gone throught hero of since the Sunday Mail joined the campaign.

They hope sales will help carers raise some of the pounds 18million they need each year.

Strath carron Hospice fund - raising manager Angela Gillies said: "The support has been phenomenal.

We've had badges flying off the shelves and out the doors.

"People have been phoning and emailing to ask how and where to get badges for their family and friends.

"It's really heart-warming so many people want to help."

Last week rival political leaders joined forces to support the campaign.

First Minister Alex Salmond, Labour's Wendy Alexander, Lib Dem Nicol Stephen, SNP's Michael Matheson and Tory Annabel Goldie all wore the thistle.

TV star Lorraine Kelly, patron of Strathcarron Hospice in Stirlingshire, is also urging people to buy the pin.

GMTV celebrity stylist Mark Hayes is also joining the campaign and organising a fashion show in aid of Strathcarron at the Howgate shopping centre in Falkirk on Wednesday.

And Princess Anne visited the hospice last week to support their efforts.
