DALLAS, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) today announced a new family of high performance TravelMate(R) notebook computers that dramatically improves performance in demanding mobile multimedia and communications applications by taking advantage of the new Intel 166MHz Pentium(R) processor with MMX(TM) technology.
Available in two models -- the 6160 and the 6160NT -- the new TravelMate 6100 Series is designed to provide mobile professionals with full desktop functionality and performance in a notebook computer that can easily handle high-performance multimedia presentations and advanced communications applications such as video conferencing and telecommunications. In addition to the 166MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology, the Series features 32MB of EDO RAM standard (expandable to 96MB), 512KB L2 cache, 2.1GB HDD, a 10X CD- ROM drive, a brilliant 12.1" SVGA TFT color display with a NeoMagic 128-bit graphics controller and an integrated 33.6 Kbps modem with digital simultaneous voice/data (DSVD) and telephony capabilities.
"Because of our unique focus on mobile computing, we understand the ever- increasing demands of mobile professionals. As a result, we have designed the TravelMate 6100 Series specifically for our largest segment of customers -- business professionals who rely on their notebook as their primary computer for on-site customer presentations and sales transactions," said Steve Lair, vice president, worldwide marketing and sales for Texas Instruments Personal Productivity Products. "We have dramatically improved our customers' ability to be effective and productive without increasing the footprint or weight of his or her notebook computer." Typical applications cited by Lair include real estate sales and sales/service force automation projects.
Enhanced Multimedia and Communications Applications
With the TravelMate 6100 Series, customers will experience an increased performance when using current and future multimedia and communications applications. Specifically, the new models with the Pentium MMX technology will offer higher quality audio and video for multimedia applications such as video conferencing; multimedia presentations; Internet/Intranet applications such as Web browsing and publishing; and image and video processing.
A clear performance advantage also will be recognized when using communications applications including email with multimedia; speech command, control and dictation and remote database and LAN access.
Easy-to-Use Integrated 33.6 Kbps Modem with x2(TM) Capability
The TravelMate 6100 Series features an integrated 33.6 Kbps modem with digital simultaneous voice/data (DSVD) capabilities. The integrated modem includes telephony features such as caller identification, a distinctive ring, an answering machine and a full-duplex speakerphone that allows users to talk with and listen to the person on the other end without interrupting the normal flow of conversation. The modem also features the new x2 technology that enables customers to receive data at up to 56 Kbps from many Internet and corporate servers using a compatible modem.
"With the capability to receive data at up to 56 Kbps, the modem greatly increases the speed for customers accessing the Internet while saving them time and money when downloading from the Internet or corporate email systems," continued Lair. "And the integrated modem frees up a PC Card slot so customers can expand the functionality of the notebook if and when required."
Unmatched Flexibility with Modular Media Bay
The TravelMate 6100 Series includes a modular bay system that houses a 1.44MB floppy disk drive or a 10X CD-ROM drive (both come standard with the notebook). The modular bay can house up to eight media bay options including a Li-Ion battery, a high-capacity diskette drive, a cellular phone battery charger, a personal organizer module, a weight reduction module or a second 2.1GB HDD.
Complete Desktop Solution with Windows NT(R)
While the TravelMate 6160 will come dual installed with Windows(TM) 95 and Windows for Workgroups, TI's TravelMate 6160NT model will offer a complete desktop replacement solution with the Windows NT Workstation 4.0 operating system. Windows NT offers many advantages such as data protection, easy Internet access through built-in TCP/IP networking, and ease-of-use through the familiar Windows 95 interface. In addition, the Windows NT offering allows customers to take advantage of powerful features such as a higher level of security and reliability.
Pricing and Availability
Available in February, the TravelMate 6100 Series will be sold through the traditional distribution channels, including VARs, distributors, dealers and select retail outlets. The TravelMate 6100 Series will have estimated street prices of $4,999 for the TravelMate 6160 and $5,199 for the TravelMate 6160NT.
