Teshima's Inn.

Teshima's Inn, State 11, Honalo; 322-9140. Angled around an overgrown Japanese garden, this 10-room, family-run inn also caters mostly to locals. But Mainland travelers looking for an inexpensive room for the night are welcome (two rooms are held open for nonlocals; no reservations are needed).

The rooms are dark and small, but clean; bathrooms are private. A family-run restaurant, which fronts the motel on noisy State 11, serves three Japanese or American meals a day.

Just south of the junction of State 11 and State 180, 5 miles south of Kailua, look for the Teshima Restaurant sign on the west side of the road. The motel sits behind the restaurant.
