Tertia production for Quinta's primus year.

Quinta, S.A., has a basic recipe for international success. It thrives on a European flavor of programming, mixed with one pace, rhythm and production values of American productions.

"We are an international television production company just founded a year ago." said Jean-Louis Bironne, Quinta's Paris-based distribution chief. "Our aim is to produce quality prime time product exclusively dedicated to drama - mini-series, movies of the week and series."

The company has three partners headed by Italian media magnate, Silvio Berlusconi. The other partners are Tarak Ben Ammar, president (Roman Polanski's Pirates) and Peby Guisez (one of four partners of U.G.C., the French film and TV sales company).

"We have our own financing," Bironne said. "We don't have to shop around. We come in, we like the product, we develop, produce and distribute it. We like to keep a low profile. So many companies talk about their future plans. There are so many uncertainties in this business. We like to first complete a project and then discuss it."

Quinta has what is considered two major blockbusters in the U.S. in the next few months. The first is an NBC mini series, Drug Wars 2: The Columbia Connection, co-produced with Michael Mann (Miami Vice). The four-hour project stars Dennis Farina, Alex McClaster, and Julie Carmen. Shot in Madrid and Miami, it's been budgeted at $10 million. "It's presold almost everywhere in the world," Bironne said.

The second Quinta production is an ABC made-for-TV movie, Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus. It stars Charles Bronson, Edward Asner and Richard Thomas. "It's based on the famous letter," said Silvio Muraglia, Quinta's newly formed Los Angeles chief. The former U.S. RAI executive opened the new base early in 1991. Yes, Virginia...is being co-produced with Paradigm Entertainment and Andrew Sarady Productions. The world premiere is set for MIPCOM.

In addition, Quinta plans to produce a movie for the USA Network. According to Muraglia, they are teaming up with the Winkler/Daniels Company to co-produce The Carol Stevens Story, based on the true story of the American woman who wanted to adopt a Romanian child. They expect to be in production by spring 1992.
